Rising Temps and Rain Chances: What to Expect This Mother’s Day Weekend

Good Thursday morning, North Texas! We started the day on a chilly note with actual lows in the 40s and 50s across the region. However, a pleasant recovery is underway.

Today (Thursday): A Bright Rebound

High pressure has settled in, meaning we’ll see a nice “bounce” in temperatures this afternoon. Highs will push into the upper 60s to lower 70s under mostly sunny skies. Winds will remain light and variable, primarily from the east at about 10 mph.

Friday: Increasing Clouds & Early Rain Chances

Temperatures continue to climb on Friday with highs reaching the upper 70s to near 80°. A warming south/southwest breeze returns as moisture begins to overspread the area.

  • Rain Chances: The latest data indicates that widely scattered showers and thunderstorms could develop as early as sunrise Friday morning within a mid-level moisture plume.
  • Target Area: While activity may be scattered, the primary focus for daytime rain remains south of I-20.
  • Impact: Some heavy downpours or small hail are possible, but severe weather is not currently expected. Coverage increases Friday night.

The Weekend: A Mother’s Day Front

Saturday will likely be the “dry” day of the weekend, with a significant warmup sending highs into the upper 80s to near 90°.

Mother’s Day (Sunday) will be a bit more active:

  • Conditions: It will be hotter and humid with highs in the mid-80s.
  • Afternoon Front: A cold front will “inch” into the area by late afternoon. This boundary will provide the necessary lift for more widespread scattered showers and thunderstorms.
  • Plan Ahead: While not a total wash-out, you’ll want to have a backup plan for outdoor Mother’s Day festivities as the front moves through during the evening.

Extended Outlook: The Heat Is On

Behind Sunday’s front, we’ll see a brief temperature dip back to the 79° range on Monday. However, the ridge builds back in quickly. By next Wednesday, skies remain mostly cloudy but the mercury will continue to trend upward, with highs likely approaching 90°.
