January in North Texas: Sunny & 60s Today, 70s Ahead, Then Thursday Showers & Thunder Possible

Happy Saturday, North Texas!

We’re off to a classic early January morning east of Dallas with those low gray clouds hanging around, but don’t worry – they’re on the move. Expect that overcast layer to gradually lift through the late morning, giving way to a gorgeous afternoon ahead. We’re talking mostly sunny skies, temperatures climbing comfortably into the mid to upper 60s, and a light north breeze keeping things crisp and refreshing.

As we head into Saturday evening, it’ll cool off steadily but stay quite pleasant. Plan for a chilly but not cold evening with temperatures dropping through the 50s under clear to mostly clear skies and those same light winds.

Looking ahead to Sunday: A shift is coming. Mid-level clouds will start increasing through the day as winds turn back around to the south (bringing a touch more moisture and mild air). While it’ll feel a bit milder overall, those thickening clouds will cap our daytime highs mostly in the mid 60s – still above average for early January, but noticeably cloudier than today.

Then we kick off the work week with a nice rebound. Monday through most of Wednesday should bring us back into the 70s – very spring-like for this time of year – with plenty of sunshine and dry conditions. It’s the kind of mild, enjoyable stretch that makes January in North Texas so special.

Our next big weather maker arrives mid to late week. A cold front is forecast to push through late Wednesday into Thursday, bringing our next chance for scattered showers – and possibly a few rumbles of thunder – especially areas near and east of I-35. Keep an eye on updates as we get closer, but right now it looks like a decent shot at some much-needed rainfall.
